Cybersecurity and Critical Infrastructure

The maintenance and reliability of cybersecurity systems and critical infrastructure are essential to the security of our nation. With advancements in cyberphysical and cyberinformation systems (known as the Internet of Things (IoT)), unparalleled opportunities for improved monitoring, operations and reliability of systems have been made readily available to all aspects of personal, public, private and commercial entities.

SMRP believes in a sound cyber-defense strategy and that research into the potential threat through the first line of defense and the inter-connectivity between companies, vendors, contractors, and subcontractors is the first-step towards better understanding the threats posed through IoT devices.

SMRP’s policy on how maintenance and reliability of cybersecurity systems and critical infrastructure are essential to protecting our nation’s economy and infrastructure.

SMRP is a member of the National Network led by the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Stop.Think.Connect.™ Campaign. The Stop.Think.Connect.™ Campaign. is a national public awareness campaign aimed at increasing the understanding of cyber threats and empowering the American public to be safer and more secure online.

SMRP IoT Policy Recommendation

With advances in cyberphysical and cyberinformation systems (known as the Internet of Things (IoT)), unparalleled opportunities for improved monitoring, operations, and reliability of systems have been made readily available to all aspects of personal, public, private, and commercial entities. However, significant cybersecurity issues and infrastructure vulnerabilities have arisen, and SMRP recommends the promotion, development, and implementation of a strategy for evaluating the impact of IoT devices and systems as it pertains to cybersecurity and infrastructure for small to large-sized business.

SMRP Presentation During National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Smart Grid Advisory Committee Meetings

In August 2016, Howard Penrose, SMRP Vice-Chair, presented on SMRP’s role in the future of cybersecurity at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) workshop. Introducing SMRP to an audience of government officials, international representatives, and major organizations and corporations, Howard explained how maintenance and reliability professionals are key stakeholders in cybersecurity standards and regulations. As risk and asset management experts, SMRP members are the end-users and operators of the physical assets at risk for attack. Howard’s presentation led to great connections and opportunities for SMRP to work with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, NIST, and the White House.
